Call for Papers: Language, Identity and Ideology in Ukrainian Media

Special issue of East/West: Journal of Ukrainian Studies (EWJUS)

Language, Identity and Ideology in Ukrainian Media

Guest Editors: Dr. Volodymyr Kulyk (Institute of Political and Ethnic Studies, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) and Dr. Alla Nedashkivska (University of Alberta, Canada)

EWJUS seeks contributions that explore current and past linguistic and ideological processes in various media functioning in Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora, from newspapers to television to social networks. We welcome theoretically grounded and methodologically sophisticated studies of language practice, construction of identities and ideological effects in the “old” and “new” media, with anchoring in media studies, anthropology, sociolinguistics, sociology, political science, history or other disciplines. Apart from language use and language ideologies, relevant topics can include the representations of ethnicity, religion, class, gender, sexuality and other issues in which identities are constructed and ideologies (re)produced. In addition to examinations of particular discursive and sociocultural practices, we are interested in comparative analyses of and theoretical insights into the ideological work of the media in Ukraine and beyond.
